Our Chef
Join the opening kitchen team at The Angel Inn, our community-led pub with rooms in the heart of Castle Cary. Working closely with our Senior Chef, you’ll prepare and cook simple, seasonal, produce-led dishes, using quality ingredients grown, made and sourced across The Newt in Somerset wherever appropriate. From preparation through to service, you’ll bring care, consistency and pride to every plate, helping a small team deliver welcoming pub hospitality.
As part of the opening team, the role will also contribute to establishing the kitchen operation and ways of working from the outset. Before starting at The Angel Inn, you’ll complete a full induction within The Newt in Somerset’s existing kitchen operations to understand our food standards, produce, processes and ways of working.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, cook and present dishes to agreed recipes, quality, portion and presentation standards.
- Support the Senior Chef with daily preparation and service, keeping your work organised and ensuring ingredients are ready when needed.
- Receive, store and rotate ingredients correctly, supporting stock counts, waste control and the careful use of produce.
- Follow HACCP, food safety, allergen, temperature monitoring, hygiene and kitchen health and safety procedures, completing records accurately.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised kitchen, use equipment correctly and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
- Work closely with the Senior Chef, Kitchen Porters, front-of-house team and wider Newt kitchens to support smooth service.
- Support the pre-opening kitchen set-up, including organisation, equipment familiarisation, preparation, recipe and service testing, and establishing agreed ways of working.
- Complete a full induction within The Newt in Somerset’s existing kitchen operations before starting at The Angel Inn to understand its food standards, produce, processes and ways of working.

- Practical knowledge of food preparation and cooking techniques, with the ability to deliver dishes consistently.
- Pride in high standards of food quality, presentation, hygiene and organisation.
