Be part of the team behind an exceptional artisan Bakery, keeping every shift running smoothly and to the highest standards.
Our Production Bakery Operative
Our Production Bakery Operative plays an essential role in keeping our state-of-the-art Bakery running safely, smoothly and to the highest standards. With a strong focus on cleaning and hygiene, you’ll make sure our production, dispatch and storage areas are spotless, organised and audit-ready, while also supporting the team with packing, stock, dispatch and food production tasks.
You’ll become a valued part of our Bakery team, working alongside our skilled Bakers and learning how the different areas of the operation come together. For those who are interested in developing further, there may also be opportunities to build your baking skills and work towards a Baker role over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Keep Bakery production, dispatch and storage areas clean, safe, organised and audit-ready.
- Wash, sanitise and safely store equipment, utensils, trays, tins, bowls and mixer parts, including supporting deep cleans.
- Complete cleaning schedules, hygiene records and pre-audit checks accurately using Mango.
- Follow food safety, allergen-control, COSHH, manual-handling and health and safety procedures at all times.
- Support daily production by preparing, portioning, weighing and packing products to specification.
- Assist with order picking, packing, ingredient collection, deliveries and stock rotation.
- Keep dispatch, fridge and dry-store areas organised and complete relevant records using StockUp.
- Work flexibly across Bakery sections, communicating clearly with the team and maintaining high standards when working independently.
What we can offer
- A positive workplace environment with opportunities to develop both personally and professionally.
- Peace of mind with Employee Life Cover, providing your nominated loved one with 2x your salary.
- Support from our Employee Assistance Programme, including unlimited 24/7 remote GP appointments for you and your family.
- Look after your wellbeing with complimentary access to our Spa and swimming pools and our exclusive benefit of 50% off Spa Treatments.
- Stay in shape with complimentary use of our gym and wellbeing classes.
- Access to our Cycle to Work scheme, supporting wellbeing and sustainable commuting.
- Complimentary staff meal when onsite – crafted by our dedicated kitchen team, often featuring fresh produce from our estate.
- Enjoy shopping in both our shops on estate and online with 30% discount for all our colleagues and free delivery for any online purchases.
- Complimentary garden membership for The Newt and our partner gardens, including the Eden Project, Kew Gardens and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
- We value your hard work and recognise your achievements through our colleague recognition programme – Newt Awards, with the opportunity to achieve amazing rewards, including a complimentary Hotel Stay.
- Discover exclusive perks with discounted hotel stays for staff, accompanied by a 30% discount at our restaurants.
- A team that knows how to have fun with regular team engagement activities, including Fun Squad events.
- Up to 30 days annual leave each year for our full-time team.
What we're looking for
- Reliable, punctual and willing to learn.
- Thorough and consistent, taking pride in completing every job properly and maintaining excellent standards.
- Comfortable following instructions, written procedures and cleaning specifications accurately.
- Able to work independently for short periods while knowing when to stop and ask for support.
- A good pace of work with strong attention to detail in a busy production environment.
- Comfortable with repetitive physical tasks, including standing, lifting and working in warm, chilled or wet environments.
- Basic food handling, kitchen, cleaning or production experience, or a willingness to train.
- A Level 2 Food Safety / Food Hygiene Certificate, or willingness to complete this through The Newt Academy.
Where you'll be working
We are an established bakery driven by a deep passion for crafting outstanding artisanal baked goods. Our dedicated team of bakers takes pride in producing exceptional sourdough and slow-fermented breads, viennoiseries, cakes, tarts, and other staples - always with care, precision, and purpose. We use only the finest ingredients, including Wildfarmed flour, and source locally whenever possible to ensure freshness, sustainability, and superior quality.
Our newly built, state-of-the-art bakery has been designed to support craft at the highest level. Keeping that space clean, safe and audit-ready is essential to everything we make, which is why the Production Operative role sits at the heart of the team rather than on the edge of it.
We foster a culture of openness, curiosity, and continuous improvement. Through structured internal training, external courses, food safaris, and staging opportunities with other leading bakeries, we invest in the development of our people - believing that growth, learning, and collaboration are at the heart of great baking. Production Operatives who want to progress towards Artisan and Supervisor roles are supported to do so.
