Our IT Support Assistant

From the technology behind a seamless restaurant service to the systems bringing our exhibitions to life, IT touches every corner of The Newt in Somerset. As our IT Support Assistant, you’ll provide first-line support for colleagues across our hotels, restaurants, shops, Spa and wider estate, solving everyday technical challenges and helping keep operations running smoothly. Working within our four-person IT team, you’ll set up devices, support essential systems and tackle a varied range of requests. It’s a hands-on role for a resourceful problem solver who enjoys helping people and takes pride in finding practical solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be the first point of contact for IT support, resolving everyday issues and escalating more complex problems to our IT Support Engineer.
  • Troubleshoot point-of-sale systems, payment terminals, telephony and access control systems, completing daily checks before service.
  • Support guest-facing technology in hotel rooms and public areas, alongside exhibit technology in our museums.
  • Set up and support Windows and Apple devices, printers and peripherals, and manage Microsoft 365 accounts, licences and permissions.
  • Assist with network and Wi-Fi troubleshooting, CCTV and integrated security systems, coordinating with contractors where needed.
  • Log, prioritise and track support requests, keeping colleagues informed and responding promptly to issues affecting service, guest experience or safety.
  • Support colleague onboarding and offboarding, maintaining accurate IT records, system documentation and stock of equipment.
  • Participate in the on-call rota to support the Estate’s ongoing operations.

What we can offer

  • A positive workplace environment with opportunities to develop both personally and professionally.
  • Peace of mind with Employee Life Cover, providing your nominated loved one with 2x your salary.
  • Support from our Employee Assistance Programme, including unlimited 24/7 remote GP appointments for you and your family.
  • Look after your wellbeing with complimentary access to our Spa and swimming pools and our exclusive benefit of 50% off Spa Treatments.
  • Stay in shape with complimentary use of our gym and wellbeing classes.
  • Access to our Cycle to Work scheme, supporting wellbeing and sustainable commuting.
  • Complimentary staff meal when onsite – crafted by our dedicated kitchen team, often featuring fresh produce from our estate.
  • Enjoy shopping in both our shops on estate and online with 30% discount for all our colleagues and free delivery for any online purchases.
  • Complimentary garden membership for The Newt and our partner gardens, including the Eden Project, Kew Gardens and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
  • We value your hard work and recognise your achievements through our colleague recognition programme – Newt Awards, with the opportunity to achieve amazing rewards, including a complimentary Hotel Stay.
  • Discover exclusive perks with discounted hotel stays for staff, accompanied by a 30% discount at our restaurants.
  • A team that knows how to have fun with regular team engagement activities, including Fun Squad events.
  • Up to 30 days annual leave each year for our full-time team.

What we’re looking for

  • Previous experience in first-line IT support or a service desk, ideally within hospitality, retail or a multi-site environment.
  • Working knowledge of Windows, macOS and Microsoft 365.
  • A basic understanding of networking, including LAN, Wi-Fi, DHCP, DNS and Active Directory.
  • Experience using a ticketing system and working to service-level agreements, with the ability to prioritise requests in a busy operational environment.
  • A personable, supportive approach and the confidence to explain technical issues clearly to colleagues and guests.
  • A resourceful, proactive problem solver with strong organisational skills, attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • An IT qualification at Level 3/A Level or equivalent, and a full UK driving licence.
  • Experience with POS and payment systems, access control, Ruckus networking or user training would be an advantage, as would CompTIA A+, ITIL 4 Foundation or Microsoft 365 Fundamentals qualifications.
