Our IT Support Engineer (Level 2)
From a seamless restaurant service to an interactive exhibition, technology supports extraordinary experiences across The Newt in Somerset. As our IT Support Engineer, you’ll keep that technology working at its best, tackling complex technical challenges and supporting the networks, systems and security that connect our diverse estate. Working closely with the IT Manager and guiding our Level 1 colleagues, you’ll combine hands-on problem-solving with opportunities to support new sites, openings and connected building systems. This is a varied role for someone who enjoys taking ownership, finding lasting solutions and seeing the difference their expertise makes every day.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the second-line escalation point, resolving complex IT incidents and identifying the root causes of recurring problems.
- Manage and maintain estate networks, including switching, Wi-Fi, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs and connections between sites.
- Administer Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Intune, supporting secure access, device management and collaboration tools.
- Support business-critical systems, including Oracle Simphony, payment terminals, telephony, access control and CCTV.
- Lead day-to-day cyber security activity, including patching, endpoint protection, access reviews and PCI DSS compliance for payment systems.
- Work with Engineering to support connectivity for building systems, IoT networks, museum exhibits and interactives, and assist with IT projects for new sites and openings.
- Coach our Level 1 IT Support Assistants and maintain clear system documentation, procedures, and asset and licence records.
- Participate in the on-call rota as the escalation point and deputise for the IT Manager when required.
What we can offer
- A positive workplace environment with opportunities to develop both personally and professionally.
- Peace of mind with Employee Life Cover, providing your nominated loved one with 2x your salary.
- Support from our Employee Assistance Programme, including unlimited 24/7 remote GP appointments for you and your family.
- Look after your wellbeing with complimentary access to our Spa and swimming pools and our exclusive benefit of 50% off Spa Treatments.
- Stay in shape with complimentary use of our gym and wellbeing classes.
- Access to our Cycle to Work scheme, supporting wellbeing and sustainable commuting.
- Complimentary staff meal when onsite – crafted by our dedicated kitchen team, often featuring fresh produce from our estate.
- Enjoy shopping in both our shops on estate and online with 30% discount for all our colleagues and free delivery for any online purchases.
- Complimentary garden membership for The Newt and our partner gardens, including the Eden Project, Kew Gardens and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
- We value your hard work and recognise your achievements through our colleague recognition programme – Newt Awards, with the opportunity to achieve amazing rewards, including a complimentary Hotel Stay.
- Discover exclusive perks with discounted hotel stays for staff, accompanied by a 30% discount at our restaurants.
- A team that knows how to have fun with regular team engagement activities, including Fun Squad events.
- Up to 30 days annual leave each year for our full-time team.
What we’re looking for
- Proven experience in second-line IT support or an IT engineer role, ideally within hospitality, retail or a multi-site environment.
- Strong networking knowledge, including switching, VLANs, Wi-Fi, firewalls, DHCP/DNS and VPNs.
- Strong Microsoft 365 and Entra ID administration skills, with experience of Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy and backup solutions.
- Experience supporting POS and payment systems, including Oracle Simphony and EMC, alongside a good understanding of cyber security and PCI DSS.
- A calm, organised approach, with the initiative to own problems, investigate root causes and prioritise effectively in a live operational environment.
- Clear communication skills, confidence explaining technical issues to non-technical colleagues and a supportive approach to coaching others.
- An IT qualification at Level 3/A Level or equivalent, plus a relevant industry certification such as CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft 365 Administrator.
- A full UK driving licence. Knowledge of Ruckus, Paxton Net2/Akuvox, IoT networks, building management systems or AV and exhibit technology would be an advantage.
Where you’ll be working
